Step Three:
Now, we're going to dodge and burn to
sculpt her face (a very popular portrait
retouching technique, where you make
shadow areas darker and highlight areas
brighter). Start by clicking the New button
and choosing Burn (Darken) from the
Effect pop-up menu, and then paint over
the shadow areas, making them slightly
darker (here I painted over the shadow
areas on her cheek, neck, and the left
side of her nose). Click the New button
once more, choose Dodge (Lighten)
from the Effect pop-up menu, and then
paint over the highlight areas of her face
(like down the bridge of her nose, the
top of her cheeks near her eyes, and
anywhere there's a bright highlight). Just
remember, you can control the adjustment
amounts after the fact using the sliders.
A before and after is shown below.
There are five Edit Pins here, from L to R:
(1) the Iris Enhance pin (on the left eye);
(2) the Dodge (Lighten) pin;
(3) the Teeth Whitening pin (used to whiten the eyes);
(4) the Soften Skin pin to the right of her nose; and
(5) the Burn (Darken) pin on her cheek up near her ear
The After photo (right) has sharper, more colorful irises, the whites of the eyes are brighter, her skin is softer,
and dodging and burning has slimmed and sculpted her face
