A rainbow of fresh fish on sale at Tamashiro Market.
Yama'sFishMarket Neighbor islanders have been known to drive directly from the airport to
Yama's for one of the best plate lunches in Honolulu. Robust Hawaiian plates with pork or
chicken lau lau (20 combinations!), baked ahi, chili, beef stew, shoyu chicken, and dozens of
other varieties stream out to those who line up at the counter. Many Honolulu businesses or-
der by the dozen for their offices. But Yama's is also known for its inexpensive fresh fish (mahi-
mahi is always less expensive here than in the supermarkets), tasty poke (ahi, aku, Hawaiian-
style, Oriental-style, with seaweed), lomi salmon, and many varieties of prepared seafood.
Chilled beer, boiled peanuts, and fresh ahi they'll slice into sashimi are popular for local-
style gatherings, sunset beach parties, and festive pau hana (end of work) celebrations. At its
new, larger location just a few hundred feet away, Yama's is offering more prepared foods and
bakery items than ever before; their chocolate-chip/mac-nut cookies are peerless. 2332 Young
St., Moiliili. & 808/941-9994.
