R. Field Wine Co. Foodland supermarket has won countless new converts since Richard
Field—oenophile, gourmet, and cigar aficionado—moved his wine shop here. The thriving
gourmet store offers gemlike vine-ripened tomatoes and juicy clementines, sparkling bags of
Nalo gourmet greens, designer cheeses, caviar, Langenstein Farms macadamia nuts, vegetari-
an and salmon mousses, vinegars, and all manner of epicurean delights, including wines and
single-malt Scotches. The warm, just-baked breads (rosemary-olive oil, whole-wheat, organic
wheat, and others) baked on the premises with dough flown in from Los Angeles' famous La
Brea Bakery, are a huge hit. Foodland, 1460 S. Beretania St. & 808/596-9463.
Sushi Company It's not easy to find premium-grade hamachi (yellowtail), ahi, ikura (salmon
roe), ika (cuttlefish), and other top-grade fresh ingredients in anything but a bona-fide sit-
down sushi bar. But here it is, a small, sparkling gem of a sushi maker that sells fast-food sushi
of non-fast-food quality, at great prices. Order ahead or wait while they make it. The combin-
ations range from minisets (27 pieces) to large-variety sets (43-51 pieces), ideal for picnics and
potlucks. Sushi Company has one small two-person table; most of the business is takeout. 1111

Pampered Pedicure
In Hawaii, where going barefoot is as common as breathing, and open-toed sandals and slip-
pers are the shoes of necessity, a pedicure is a must. Most resort spas will offer pedicures
among their list of services, but our favorite pedicure is from Honolulu Nails Salon, 2570 S.
Beretania St ( & 808/949-1600 ). We recommend the Special Spa Pedicure, a five-step pro-
cess of soaking, scrubs, rubs, masks, and a wonderful refreshing gel before you get down to
the polish (OPI and Essie). Allow an hour. The entire relaxing experience is $25 to $35 (and
worth every penny).
BAKERIES
If you're looking for a bakery, Saint-Germain, in Shirokiya, at Ala Moana Shopping Center
( & 808/955-1711 ), and near Times Supermarket, 1296 S. Beretania St. ( & 808/593-8711 ), sells
baguettes, country loaves, and oddball delicacies such as mini mushroom-and-spinach pizzas.
The reigning queen of bakers, though, is Cafe Laufer, 3565 Waialae Ave. ( & 808/735-7717 ).
Nearby, old-timers still line up at Sconees, 1117 12th Ave. ( & 808/734-4024 ), formerly Bea's
Pies. Sconees has fantastic scones, pumpkin-custard pies, and danishes. For warm bread,
nothing can beat Foodland, 1460 S. Beretania St. ( & 808/949-4365 for the bakery department),
where R. Field (see above) is located. The Foodland bakery flies in dough from Los Angeles'
famous La Brea bakery and bakes it fresh at this location, so you can pick up fresh-from-
