mushrooms, is especially flavorful). Equally impressive is the extensive list of seafood pastas,
including the garlic and olive oil sauté. The half-price, half-portion dinner servings are a plus.

Buzz'sOriginalSteakHouse STEAKHOUSE/SEAFOOD A Lanikai fixture for nearly a half cen-
tury, Buzz's is a few feet from Kailua Beach (windsurfing central), just past the bridge that
leads into Lanikai. (Though it's on the beach, shirt and shoes are required.) A small deck, var-
nished koa bar, rattan furniture, and wood walls covered with snapshots and surf pictures
will put you immediately at ease. Buzz's has the perfect Gauguinesque tropical ambience to
accompany its offerings: great burgers at lunch (including a mushroom garden burger), fresh
catch, a superb artichoke appetizer, and steak-and-lobster combos, all much loved by fans.
Dinner offerings are pricier, but include Alaskan king crab legs, prime rib, fresh fish, and won-
derful items at the soup and salad bar.

Lucy'sGrill'nBar ★★ HAWAII REGIONAL This is one of Kailua's most popular restaurants,
not just because of the open-air bar and the outdoor lanai seating, but because of the terrific
food (which they are now serving as both large and small plates). The menu is eclectic Hawaii
regional cuisine, with lots of choices and giant portions. The dress is casual, and the clientele
is local. Be sure to order the spicy ahi tower with sushi rice, avocado, wasabi cream, and roas-
ted nori to get you started. The fresh fish and seafood is wonderful, especially the Szechuan-
spiced jumbo tiger prawns with black-bean cream and penne pasta, and the lemongrass-crus-
ted scallops with yellow Thai curry. Save room for crème brûlée with Tahitian vanilla bean,
dark chocolate soufflé cake, or their “damn fine” apple crisp—a la mode, of course.
33 Aulike St., Kailua. & 808/230-8188. Reservations recommended. Main courses $14-$30. MC, V. Daily 5-10pm.
