B&B Etiquette
In Hawaii, it is traditional and customary to remove your shoes before entering anyone's
home. The same is true for most bed-and-breakfast facilities. Most hosts post signs or will
politely ask you to remove your shoes before entering the B&B. Not only does this keep the
place clean, but you'll also be amazed at how relaxing it is to walk around barefoot. If this
custom is unpleasant to you, a B&B may not be for you.
If you've never stayed at a B&B before, here are a few other hints: Generally the hosts live on
the property, and their part of the house is off-limits to guests (you do not have the “run of the
house”). Most likely there will be a common area that you can use. Don't expect daily maid
service. Your host may tidy up, but will not do complete maid service. Also don't expect
amenities like little bottles of shampoo and conditioner—this is a B&B, not a resort. Remem-
ber you are sharing your accommodations with other guests, so be considerate when you
come in late at night.
OutriggerReefontheBeach ★★★ help make this one of the chain's most attractive properties.
Even if you aren't staying here, wander through the renovated lobby, filled with rare and his-
toric Hawaiian artifacts (like a century-old canoe made of koa wood). The guest rooms all have
huge closets, plenty of amenities, and spacious lanais; the price is entirely dependent on the
view. Roomy bathrooms feature granite vanity tops, ceramic floor tiles, and lighted makeup
mirrors. Just added: free high-speed Internet connection (most hotels charge from $11 a day)
and free local phone calls. If money is no object, book the Deluxe Oceanfront units, which
feature oversize Jacuzzi bathtubs with ocean views of Waikiki Beach. The on-site Shorebird
Beach Broiler is an immensely popular oceanside spot offering buffet breakfasts and broil-
your-own dinners. Another on-property restaurant is Kani Ka Pila Grille, which features
nightly performances by legendary Hawaiian musicians.

Royal Hawaiian ★★ This flamingo-pink oasis, hidden away among blooming gardens within
the concrete jungle of Waikiki, is the height of luxury. Built by Matson steamship lines, the
Spanish-Moorish “Pink Palace” opened in 1927 on the same spot where Queen Kaahumanu
had her summer palace—on one of the best stretches of Waikiki Beach.
