Learners Ideas and Misconceptions
“Acids eat magnesium ribbon, rust eats up the iron nail” - spontaneous comments about
phenomena of metal-acid or metal-oxygen reactions often sound like this. This is accept-
able as long as students make these comments in everyday language. Teachers should be
familiar with such preconceptions to successfully change them into scientific mental
models.
