Table 4.4 Advantages and disadvantages of the blackboard [ 6 ]
Some advantages of the black board
Present in every class room
Quick to use (no dimming of the light or power connection needed)
Adaptation of the writings to the student's stage of development
Differentiated adjustment of the writings according to the educational progress
Involving the students step by step in the development of the writing
Highlighting important elements or emphases of the lesson without great effort
Successive additions of the writings can be made
Multitude of possibilities for creating the writings on the blackboard: outline of the
lesson, creating mind-maps, experiment planning, observations and interpretations, drawing
models, etc.
Student participation in developing the writing on the blackboard
Corrections can be made easily, also by students
High in contrast, almost every color can be used (exemption: dark colors)
Concentration of the student's attention on one point
Inspires the students to participate actively and to rework
Some disadvantages of the black board
Limited space without cleaning the blackboard
Wet black board after cleaning
Writings at the blackboard are only available for the short time of the lecture
Writings need to be thoroughly planned (proportions, relationship of picture and text)
Elaborated experimental setups and technical facilities are hard to draw
Drawing on the black board has to be learned
While the teacher draws on the black board, they turn their back on the class and cover
part of the writings, even when they stand partly sideways towards the blackboard
Black board needs to be cleaned before the lesson, it also needs to be learned how to
clean a black board (the cleaning takes time and diligence)
A big black board tempts to writing too much
Copying the blackboard takes a lot of time for some students
When students write on or draw on the blackboard, they do not have the text or the
drawing in their own notebooks
Writings which has been developed during the lesson over the entire width of the
black board, makes it considerably difficult for the student to copy it into their notebooks
Chalk makes dirty hands and clothes (when writing with chalk and even by cleaning
the board)

change like greenhouse effect and ozone layer students need scientific explanations
from the teacher, because they mostly do not understand the information and mix up
phenomena of greenhouse effect and holes of the ozone layer.
