Getting There
Tram For the Western Canals, trams 13, 14 and 17 drop off near the shops and top sights; trams 1, 2 and 5 to
the Spui are also just a short walk away. For the Jordaan, tram 10 along Marnixstraat is your best bet for the
neighbourhood's western edge; trams 13 and 14 along Rozengracht go through the centre.
The Sights in a Day
Do the Dutch thing and carve into a hulking pancake at, well, Pancakes! (
Click here ) . Poke around the surrounding shops, then cross over Prinsengracht
to see what life on the water is like at the Houseboat Museum ( Click here ) .
Devote the afternoon to the neighbourhood's gorgeous canals. Visit Het
Grachtenhuis ( Click here ) , which tells the story of the 400-year-old water-
ways and their engineering genius. Afterward walk along the Herengracht and ogle the
Golden Age manors rising up along the canal. No wonder the entire area is a Unesco
World Heritage site. Munch a canalside lunch at Buffet van Odette ( Click here ) . Photo-
graphy buffs can see what's on at Huis Marseille ( Click here ).
Head over to the Anne Frank Huis ( Click here ) in the early evening, when
crowds are thinnest. For dinner, sip Spanish sparkling wine while rounds of tapas
hit the table at La Oliva ( Click here ) . Then take your pick of brown cafes for a nightcap.
Café 't Smalle ( Click here ) always hosts a high-spirited group. Or croon with the crowd
at De Twee Zwaantjes ( Click here ) .
