all art deco stained glass, gilt trim and soaring ceilings. Regular customers, including
members of the Dutch royal family, have private humidors here. You can sample your

Top Tip
Magic Truffles
Psilocybin mushrooms are banned in the Netherlands, but trippy magic truffles are legal. They're widely avail-
able at 'smart shops', which deal in organic uppers and natural hallucinogens. Counter staff advise on the nuances
of dosages and possible effects, as if at a pharmacy. Listen to them. Every year, emergency-room nurses have to
sit with people on bad trips brought on by consuming more than the recommended amount. Also, it seems obvi-
ous, but never buy truffles or other drugs on the street.

ganic hemp, cotton and bamboo. The locally made Dutch items sell under the label Hemp

SMART DRUGS
Were it not for its truffles trade you might swear this large, beautiful space was a fashion-
able clothing or homewares store. In addition to smart drugs, there's a coffee and juice bar
and a chill-out lounge area overlooking Damrak. ( www.kokopelli.nl ; Warmoesstraat 12;
