Sample organic beers named after classic Dutch singers at the multilevel tasting room of
De Prael brewery, a do-good business known for employing people with a history of men-
tal illness. It's mostly a younger crowd that hoists suds and forks into well-priced stews
and other Dutch standards at the comfy couches and big wood tables strewn about. Bands
plug in some nights. (

Top Tip
How to Drink Jenever
You're at the local tasting house, and you've ordered a jenever (akin to gin). It arrives in a tulip-shaped shot glass
filled to the brim. You can't pick it up without spilling it. What to do? Bend over the bar, with your hands behind
your back, and take a deep sip. That's what tradition dictates.

GRAND CAFE
Watch the Amstel flow by from the balcony and waterside terraces of this soaring, bright
and very grand cafe, one of our favourites. The great reading table has loads of foreign
publications for whiling away hours over beers. If you're feeling a bit peckish, hit the fab-
ulous buffet salad bar (a rarity in Amsterdam). ( www.cafedejaren.nl ; Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20;
