TASTING HOUSE

This small tasting house (dating from 1679) serves scores of jenever and liqueurs in an ar-
cade behind Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. Although there are no seats or stools, it is an intim-
ate place to knock back a taste or two with a friend. Guides give an English-language tour
of the distillery every Saturday at 12.30pm (€9, reservations not required). ( www.wynand-fo-

Boasting the city's highest beer turnover rate, gritty Hoppe has been filling glasses for
more than 300 years. Journalists, bums, socialites and raconteurs toss back brews amid the
ancient wood panelling. Most months the energetic crowd spews out from the dark interior
and onto the Spui. Note the entrance is to the right of the pub-with-terrace of the same
name. ( www.cafehoppe.nl ; Spui 18-20;

BROWN CAFE

Candles burn even during the day at this bar based in a mid-16th-century house, which is
one of two remaining wooden buildings in the city. Vintage jazz on the stereo enhances the
time-warp feel. The name allegedly comes from the bar's role in the 16th and 17th centur-
ies as a crash pad for sailors from the Far East, who often toted aapjes (monkeys) with
them. (
