Lanskroon
€
BAKERY & SWEETS
Other historic bakeries have prettier fixtures and daintier cakes, but only humble Lansk-
roon has such a remarkable
stroopwafel
- crispy, big as a dessert plate and slathered with
caramel, honey or a deceptively healthy-tasting fig paste. In winter, locals come for spicy
speculaas
cookies and other holiday treats, and in summer there's thick nut- or fruit-
swirled ice cream.

Gebr Niemeijer

This French bakery is a real find amid the Nieuwendijk's head shops. Grab a newspaper
and plop down at one of the sturdy wood tables to linger over flaky croissants for break-
fast or fantastic sandwiches made with walnut bread and lamb sausage (or gruyére cheese,
or fig jam…) for lunch.

Haesje Claes
€€
TRADITIONAL DUTCH
Haesje Claes' warm surrounds, a tad touristy but with lots of dark wood and antique
knick-knacks, are just the place to sample comforting pea soup and
stamppot
(potatoes
mashed with kale, endive or sauerkraut). The fish starter has a great sampling of different
Dutch fish.
