Nieuwe Kerk (dating from 1408 - it's all relative) is the historic stage of Dutch corona-
tions and royal weddings. Other than such ceremonies, the building no longer functions as
a church, but rather a hall for art and cultural exhibitions. For a free peek, slip through the
gift shop (by the entrance) and upstairs for a display on the church's history. (New Church;

What looks like an ordinary canal house turns out to have an entire Catholic church
stashed inside. Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Dear Lord in the Attic) was built in the
mid-1600s in defiance of the Calvinists. Inside you'll see labyrinthine staircases, rich art-
works, period decor and the soaring, two-storey church itself. The museum is undergoing
restoration through 2013, so some artefacts have been put away temporarily. (

Descend the stairs across from Rokin 96 and behold the north-south metro line excavation
in action. The massive engineering project is like a sci-fi movie: an abyss filled with muck
and pipes and colossal digging machines. The whole place rumbles when a tram passes
overhead. The displays and signage are in Dutch, but English-speaking guides often are
on hand. ( www.noordzuidlijn.amsterdam.nl ; across from Rokin 96;
