The Walk
This tour is a hit parade of Amsterdam's favourite foods and historic sights. Swoop through
the Western Canals and City Centre, gobbling up traditional kaas (cheese), haring (herring)
and jenever (gin) in between stops at the city's birthplace and its Royal Palace. It's a big
bite of Amsterdam in under two hours. The best time to trek is early afternoon, when open-
ing times for sights and bars coincide.
Start De Kaaskamer, tram 1/2/5 Spui
Finish Wynand Fockink, tram 4/9/16/24/25 Dam
Length 2km, 1½ to two hours with stops
Take a Break
Inviting cafes and brainy bookstores ring the Spui (pronounced 'spow'; rhymes with
'now'), a broad square where academics and journalists hang out. Hoppe ( Click here ) has
poured for the literati for over 300 years.
