4 Centrale Bibliotheek Amsterdam

OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
This nine-storey 'tower of knowledge' (its self-appointed nickname) is the country's
largest library and has claimed a commanding spot in Amsterdam's increasingly modern
landscape. Inviting chairs and couches are scattered around every floor, as are loads of in-
ternet terminals (per half-hour €1). The top-floor cafeteria provides terrific views over the
city and water (you can go look without having to buy anything). (Amsterdam Central Library;

Top Tip
Sightseeing from the Tram
For a bit of passive sightseeing, look no further than the tram: the lines rattle through great cross-sections of the
city. One of the best routes is tram 10. It starts near Westerpark, swings around the perimeter of the canal loop
and heads out to the Eastern Docklands, passing 19th-century housing blocks, the Rijksmuseum and Brouwerij 't
IJ windmill along the way. Another good route is tram 5, starting at Centraal Station and cutting south through the
centre of town.
