The Sights in a Day
Tick off the main sights in the morning. Take the escalators up to the top-floor
cafe of the Centrale Bibliotheek Amsterdam ( Click here ) for a great view of
the cityscape (and optional breakfast). Walk over the bridge to wild-looking NEMO (
Click here ) , Amsterdam's kiddie-mobbed science center; another free vista unfurls from
its terrace. Continue along the waterfront to ARCAM ( Click here ) to stock up on archi-
tectural info. Then plunge into Het Scheepvaartmuseum ( Click here ) , the treasure-rich
maritime museum.
Spend the afternoon exploring the Eastern Docklands' odd, mod architecture.
Pop into Snel ( Click here ) for a sandwich to fortify. Then start wandering west-
ward, past buildings like the huge angular silver one dubbed 'the Whale'. Cross the bridge
to KNSM Eiland for drinks at Kanis & Meiland ( Click here ) or Kompaszaal ( Click
here ) , two cafes that are neighbourhood hang-outs. The latter sits in the former Dutch
steamboat company arrivals hall.
Reserve ahead for dinner at Fifteen ( Click here ), celeb chef Jamie Oliver's do-
good restaurant that trains underprivileged youth. Follow with an evening of mu-
sic. The big-gun Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ ( Click here ) , jazzy Bimhuis ( Click here )
and lower-priced Conservatorium van Amsterdam ( Click here ) play notes nearby.
