Hemelse Modder
€€
CONTEMPORARY DUTCH
Celery-green walls and blond-wood tables are the backdrop for light and unpretentious
food, which emphasises North Sea fish and farm-fresh produce. If there's no berry pud-
ding for dessert, the namesake
hemelse modder
(heavenly mud) chocolate mousse is a
good fallback. The back terrace makes for lovely al fresco dining.

Lastage
€€€
Small, cosy Lastage is another one of those rose-among-thorns places. The changing
menu might start with, say, stuffed guinea fowl atop red cabbage, followed by halibut with
nutty Camargue wild rice, beetroot puree and saffron sauce. It's all beautifully presented,
and the elegant wine list matches to a tee.

Café Kadijk
€€
INDONESIAN
This sunny, split-level cafe looks like it can serve no more than coffee from its tiny kit-
chen, but in fact it does quite good Indonesian food. Go for the
eitjes van tante bea
(a
spicy mix of egg, shrimp and beans), as well as a mini version of the normally gigantic
rijsttafel
(Indonesian banquet).
