BROWN CAFE
Pull up a chair on the terrace at this cafe on the Amstel and it's hard to decide whether to
face the beautiful buildings or the gleaming river lined with houseboats. Inside stylish
drinkers hoist beverages in the plush booths and along the marble bar. Lap up organic and
local beers (such as de Prael) and bar snacks like lamb meatballs.

Spargo
So you've done Oosterpark - sought out all the monuments and found the wild parrots
chattering in the trees - and now need a drink to replenish? Spargo's buzzy little terrace
sends out its siren call from across the street. It pours several local Dutch brews, including
Brouwerij 't IJ (the windmill brewery a short distance away). FYI, the cafe's sign looks like
Spar90.

Take the elevator to the 7th floor for this restaurant-bar-club. It's edgy and improvisational,
and is the social centre for all the artists with studios in the building (the former Volkskrant
newspaper office). The sweet views are heightened by the creative cocktails (say, a lemon-
grass martini or Japanese gin fizz). Music is varied, from vintage voodoo to hippie psyche-
delic, with jazz and funk, too.
