MUSEUM

You could spend all day in this absorbing anthropology museum, watching Bollywood
clips, peering into faux bazaar stalls and listening to hits on the Mexican jukebox. The mu-
seum began as a collection of colonial booty, so the areas covering former Dutch territory
are particularly rich. (Tropics Museum;

The larger Albert Cuypmarkt in De Pijp may be the king of street bazaars, but the Dapper-
markt is a worthy prince. The Oost's cultural diversity shows in the whirl of people, foods
and goods from sports socks to shimmering fabrics, all sold from stalls lining the street.

Understand
Multiculturalism & Immigration Conflict
Scratch that vision of a metropolis of 6ft-tall blond people. With nearly half its population hailing from other coun-
tries, Amsterdam rivals much bigger cities for diversity. People from the Netherlands' former colonies, Indonesia
and Suriname, form the largest minority groups. Other significant presences in the city are Turks and Moroccans,
many second-generation. The first wave came over in the 1960s, when the government recruited migrant workers
to bridge a labour gap. The remaining 170 or so nationalities recorded in Amsterdam's most recent census repres-
ent the rest of the globe.
