The Final Years (1889-90)
The last room on Floor 1 has paintings from Van Gogh's final years. He had himself com-
mitted to an asylum in St Remy in 1889. While there he painted several landscapes with
cypress and olive trees, and he went wild with Irises . In 1890 he left the clinic and went
north to Auvers-sur-Oise. One of his last paintings, Wheatfield with Crows (1890), is an
ominous work finished shortly before his suicide.
