Leidseplein) takes pride of place on the Leidseplein. The regal venue, built in 1894, is
used for large-scale plays, operettas and the Holland Festival, the country's biggest
arts extravaganza. Amsterdam's main ticket desk is also stashed inside, where you
can see what's on and get half-price seats for shows around town.
Drinks at Café Americain
Pull up a chair, order a cappuccino and watch the world spin by at Café Americain
(Eden Amsterdam American Hotel, Leidsekade 97; from 7am; 1/2/5/7/10 Leidseplein) . The art
deco monument, opened in 1902, has huge stained-glass windows overlooking
Leidseplein, a lovely, library-like reading table and a great terrace. It serves a
sandwich-and-macaron-stacked high tea daily at 2pm.
