In-Depth Information
7 Not everyone in the workshops was able or willing to participate in interviews and
mappings.
8 Any vegetable plants/gardens established with seeds from FUNDECI's project were not
mapped, because they were part of a current process.
9 Most houses are built using a variety of materials, chiefly scrap pieces of metal, plastic,
concrete blocks, wood and, in extreme cases, cardboard (much of which is scrounged,
however, not bought). A form of construction is concrete block foundations and
wooden or corrugated metal walls. This type of construction is referred to locally as
minifalda, which literally translates to 'miniskirt'.
10 Participants classified spicy chillies as a herb and not a vegetable, most likely because it
was used as flavouring in cooking.
11 Although chilli plants require direct sunlight, as with many varieties belonging to the
nightshade family, too much sun can reduce the production of and damage fruit.
Thus, as stated above, many households find small areas in patios that receive a
limited amount of direct sunlight (usually morning) and plant chilli plants there.
