men was their procurement of tree seedlings, cuttings or tree branches from
sides of streets, in the main road that runs through San Augusto, in public
parks and from private properties.
The most prevalent socio-ecological networks were those of family,
friends and neighbours. This corresponds with studies in gender and
development emphasizing the importance of informal social networks in
livelihood strategies (Moser, 1993; Peake and Trotz, 1999). Women were the
main participants in UA workshops and the interviews and mapping phases,
implying for this study that establishment and maintenance of patios in San
Augusto is primarily carried out by women. However, as much as women's
socio-ecological networks comprised family, friends and neighbours
(primarily within Managua), there was no collective initiative to create
community gardens. This was mentioned in several focus groups, and most
women and men responded that no-one in San Augusto had proposed such an
idea. Moreover, even when the neighbourhood was being established, no area
was set aside for communal use.
