The most common fruit trees were mango and avocado, followed by papaya,
coconut and banana/plantain. Along with these, almost all patios had a
different combination of fruit trees, such as lime, orange, guava, sapote,
mamo´n (commonly known as 'honeyberry' in English), jocote (a tropical
plum) and maran˜on (cashew). The majority of these trees are relatively large,
producing shade in patios and houses. This is critical in Managua, where
daytime temperatures average 328C year round. Thus, large fruit trees such as
mangoes and avocadoes protect the houses and patios from harsh sun and
heat, keeping them cool.
In fact, respondents noted a main attribute of San Augusto as being the
cool temperatures compared with other areas of Managua. Yet, although fruit
