Figure 8.1 Actor interactions in a sustainable development and good
governance context
In this agricultural centre, the research showed that water is polluted in
part because of the rampant and unregulated use of chemical fertilizers and
pesticides. These problems, however, are surmountable but need better
strategies for urban management. With regards to the Centre Agricole de
N'djili, solutions are summarized in a 'Sustainable Environmental Governance'
model that outlines three complementary and closely overlapping groups -
public power, civil society and the private sector (Figure 8.1).
Further research is needed to determine the source of chemical and
bacteriological contamination of the market gardeners' water. Kinshasa also
suffers from the lack of laboratory facilities to test the biological and chemical
qualities of the water used in market gardening which should become an
important objective of new investments in research.
