watershed of the Rı´ mac River in the eastern part of the city. Three of its four
vegetable production sites were selected in this study to assess the impact of
irrigation water on soils and in vegetables. The three sites selected for study
were Carapongo, Nieverı´ a and Huachipa (Figure 7.2). Site selection was
chosen because of the extent of the farms (871 of 1115 ha of all vegetable
production areas are located in these three sites). In addition, land use change
is occurring very rapidly in the fourth farming area (N
˜
an˜ a) because of the
conversion of agricultural land into permanently built-up areas which are
covered with infrastructure (Juarez et al, 2007).
