Control groundwater levels and develop year-round vegetative cover (keep-
ing water levels high is necessary to prevent peat oxidation, decomposition,
and subsequent erosion of peat).
Reclaim abandoned agricultural soil in order to minimize erosion.
Recreate aquatic habitats to restore biodiversity.
Create an ecotourism industry as “a balance between nature and environ-
mentally sensitive agricultural development” (Dimentman, Bromley, and
Por 1992) in order to provide an alternative income for former farmers.
Revive the spirit of an extinct ecosystem of worldwide ecological and
historical significance (as was also a motivation behind the restoration of
Xochimilco in Mexico, as described in chapter 11).
