Design Guidelines and Recommendations
The U.S. 93 design guidelines addressed road alignment, aesthetics, cultural inter-
pretation, small town design, restoration, vegetation, wildlife crossings and habitat,
hydrology, pedestrian and bike access, interpretive overlooks, signage, and visitor
centers. These guidelines were aligned with tribal values as well as transportation
goals, and strongly directed the design and construction of the highway facility and
associated developments (Figure 17.20).
Since the existing highway bisected multiple riparian corridors and wetland sys-
tems transecting the Jocko and Mission Valleys, our design concepts incorporated
hydrological and floodplain restoration. For example, small bridges or metal culverts
restricting water and wildlife flows were replaced with significantly larger spans or
