Because of these long-standing and unsettled problems, the Tribes asked Jones &
Jones Architects and Landscape Architects to be their advocates in designing a new
highway that respected tribal values. As Grant Jones explained: “This is what rarely
gets spoken. There is a sense of place here, because there are spirits here in the land-
scape, in the ground. When does the spirit stop coming to a Place? Ask yourself: Will
the road, when it's built through the valley, drive the spirit away? What can I do so
the spirit is not driven away?”
