by candles, which are of course another income-generating activity for the local women
(Irani 2004; Figure  16.11). So the site was saved for ecotourism at the same time as
providing alternative income for those living in the area. Importantly, women have been
empowered in the process and are now making decisions for their families because they
are bringing money into the household. Also, such a strategy of increasing eco-literacy
by targeting women through training is based on Gandhi's famous maxim that “if you
educate a man, you educate one person, but if you educate a woman, you educate the
whole family.”
