lesson emerging from Prek Toal is that fishing productivity can now be clearly shown
to be dependent on the extent and quality of the flooded forest (Poole 2005). In the long
term, commercial fishing as currently practiced may not be compatible with the protec-
tion of biodiversity, leading Poole (2005) to suggest that the area should eventually be
managed as a fish sanctuary rather than as a consignment fishing lot.
To support his argument that industry needn't be seen as ipso facto disastrous to
nature conservation, Poole (2005) offers the example of the Kulen protected area
