( Continued ) Amenities at the Parque Ecologico de Xochimilco.
Over a raised walkway across the busy highway from the ecological park is the
sister recreational park that is governed locally. Here it is possible to play a variety
of sports, have picnics, take carnival-type rides, paddle boats about small lakes, feed
birds, and construct religious shrines (FigureĀ 11.27).
Entrance admission for the recreation park is a fraction of the cost for the accom-
panying ecology park, and this has unfortunately resulted in class segregation.
Structural elements in both parks, but particularly within the recreation park, are
now in serious need of repair and thus of a much better program of long-term sus-
tainable, economically viable maintenance.
