In-Depth Information
Today Xochimilco is a suburb of the sprawling megalopolis of Mexico City
and is easily reached by a simple and inexpensive train ride and thus accessible to
tourism, which has played a dramatic role in “restoring the natural capital” ( sensu
Aronson, Milton, and Blignaut 2007) of the area. Up to twenty thousand people now
regularly visit Xochimilco on a weekend day to ride about the network of restored
canals on trajinera boats that are often operated by former farmers whose lands were
returned back into wetlands (Figure  11.16). Xochimilco has therefore become the
Venice of the New World and is recognized as being a great place to visit, especially
to celebrate one's birthday as a floating party accompanied by boats selling music
