In-Depth Information
adapted to another wetland interpretation center planned for Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi
Urban Planning Council 2007), and they are certainly adaptable to what might develop
in the future in Iraq. For the Azraq Oasis, it is important to emphasize that much atten-
tion was directed toward children in a belief that it is they who will become the best
vehicles for advocacy.
So though the “rebirth” of these desert wetlands is still in its infancy, it is hoped
that with maturity the Azraq Oasis will help the entire country of Jordan address its
very serious water management concerns. At the same time, the environmental res-
toration efforts in Azraq, particularly with respect to the development of an increased
feeling of connectivity to the ecosystem—an issue of paramount importance to the
sustainable success of any restoration project (France 2007; see also chapter 2)—can
offer a valuable lesson for how similar activities might unfold in Iraq.
