If virtual work expressions are employed for stability problems and other nonlinear
theories, the analysis can be based on the methods already given in previous chapters,
especially on the displacement method of Chapters 4 to 6. In this chapter, the displacement
approach is demonstrated for structures with one-dimensional members, especially beam
columns and frames including second order effects.
A variety of approximations for these systems can be formulated beginning with the
