rHuEPO treatment is comparable to that obtained from healthy donors after
rHuEPO [91].
Darbepoetin alfa in ACD
Darbepoetin alfa is an EPO analog with modified glycosylation permitting a
longer half-life in the circulation. Darbepoetin alfa is able to correct anemia in
an animal model of cytokine-mediated anemia [93]. Although it has not been
studied in patients with ACD and classic inflammatory disorders such as
rheumatoid arthritis, darbepoetin alfa has been shown to be effective in anemic
patients with cancer not receiving chemotherapy (another clinical model for
ACD) [94]. The optimal dosing schedule for ACD is not yet established.
