and Culture
Modern Nepal, which lies between India and Tibet, pre-
sents a complex diversity of people, languages, and ethnic
groups. Visitors observe Nepalese peopleᆳtheir societies,
appearances, and culturesᆳas a complex combination resulting from
centuries of multiethnic and multilingual interactions. Broadly, three
major geographical regions reflect three different ethnic communi-
ties and language groups. Such diverse communities and languages
have resulted in a complex pattern of customs and beliefs that make
it hard to generalize about Nepalese society, its people, and its culture
in general.
POPULATION
Despite its small territory, rural poverty, and subsistence economy,
Nepal's population is home to approximately 29 million people. This
