In 1990 an antiﾭpanchayat movement in Nepal sparked mass
demonstrations against the monarchy, which led to the reinstatement
of a democratic, multiparty system. King Birenda, Mahendra's
successor, later declared a prime minister for the Nepalese Parliament,
and the first election was held in 1991.
