Despite being elected as prime minister of Nepal in the country's first
exercise of democracy, Bishweshor Prasad Koirala was thrown in jail
by King Mahendra. Political parties were banned and a new political
system was implemented after the monarch took over Nepal. Pictured

He was the first elected prime minister of Nepal's modern era.
