In-Depth Information
Indians in military service to European countries were known as
sepoys, a rank considered to be equal to private. In May 1857, Indian
soldiers were forced to use ammunition cartridges greased in pork
and beef fat, violating both their Muslim and Hindu faiths. This led to
the Sepoy Revolt of 1857, resulting in the sepoys killing their British
superiors in the military, their takeover in Delhi, and their eventual
defeat by the British army.
