With skill and patience, lime plasters can be repaired se-
lectively in historic work by patching in new plaster to the
old, retaining the areas that were still sound.
Hydraulic limes
Since air limes set slowly over several weeks or months on exposure to air, they are not
suitable for all applications. For thousands of years, masons and engineers have experi-
mented with the use of various types of stone, and found that different types produce build-
ing limes with a range of different qualities.
It was discovered that certain types of limestone, including some chalks, produced a build-
ing lime that was able to set relatively quickly on exposure to water (hydration), instead of
