Lintels
Permanent shuttering might at first seem the obvious solution when casting the top of an
opening, but it is not difficult to provide support for drying hempcrete if temporary shut-
tering is used. Battens laid across the opening, spaced 50mm apart and at least 50mm from
the external face of the wall, are cast into the hempcrete above the opening to provide re-
inforcement, extending across the whole opening into the wall on either side. These are
either fixed to the frame or laid loose inside the cast material, bearing on the hempcrete on
each side (see Figure 37).
