With any building material, appropriate detailing relies on the architect or designer under-
standing the material in question. The following is a set of essential, but not exhaustive,
points to consider when detailing hempcrete buildings:
Structural limits of the material.
Nature of the material.
Construction process.
Topography and climate of the site.
Structural limits of the material
As a wet-mixed, loose-fill material, cast hempcrete can form more or less any shape you
can mould it to. And since it is a non-load-bearing element, its structural properties are not
a critical factor in the success of the building as a whole. However, this doesn't mean that
no thought should be given to hempcrete's own structural integrity in any given situation.
