In-Depth Information
gabions is especially appropriate for hempcrete, since it minimizes the risk of excess mois-
ture being retained in the plinth near the bottom of the hempcrete part of the wall.
Gabions can provide an alternative to concrete foundations.
Whether or not a non-concrete foundation is suitable for the site will ultimately be decided,
and the details specified, by the structural engineer for the build or a specialist geotechnic-
al engineer. The work will then need to pass inspection by building control. Bear in mind
that, unless you have an engineer and inspector who are used to low-impact building meth-
ods, the process of getting alternative foundation types specified and approved may be an
uphill struggle. If you are determined to avoid the use of concrete in your foundations, then
it is best to start having this conversation at an early stage of the structural calculations for
the build.
