Hempcrete and neighbouring brick houses at Haverhill in Suffolk, which were
monitored as part of a BRE study into the viability of hempcrete as a building
material.
More formal research is required to build up data on how a variety of factors, including
different materials, mix ratios and finishes, may alter hempcrete's resistance to damage by
moisture. But the evidence currently available, from tests and from practical experience of
examples in use, suggests that it performs extremely well in this regard.
Thermal performance
Perhaps more so than any of its other characteristics, the thermal properties of hempcrete
set it apart from other building materials. The intense focus in today's climate (both eco-
nomic and environmental) on the need to conserve energy, and increasingly stringent re-
quirements for buildings to be constructed in a way that ensures the maximum conserva-
