Dali Courtyard
$$$
YUNNAN
Idyllic on a summer evening, when you eat at tables set around the courtyard of a restored
hutong
house, this place specialises in the delicate flavours of southwest China. There's no
menu. Instead, the chef decides which five or six dishes to give you, depending on what in-
spires him and which ingredients are fresh. Drinks are extra.

Beijing Dadong Roast Duck Restaurant
$$$
A long-term favourite with Beijingers; Dadong's hallmark bird is crispy, lean and delicious.
With a large and bright dining area, this is perhaps the best place to try the capital's signa-
ture dish, but book ahead or be prepared to wait for a table.

CHINESE BARBECUE
On summer nights, Beijingers take to the
hutong
to eat and drink outside. This is one of the
most popular spots, a raucous lamb barbecue joint where you grill your own leg of lamb on
your own personal table-top spit and accompany the meat with a selection of cold dishes.
Order the lamb by the
jin
(500g). If the weather is cold, you can always eat inside.
