1 Drum Tower
HISTORIC BUILDING
OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP
Dominating the area, the drum tower dates back to 1272 (although it has been re-built
since) and provides a great view over the surrounding area. The drums were beaten here
hourly in ancient times to keep the proles punctual, and there are still daily drumming per-
formances (hourly from 9.30am to 4.45pm). The Bell Tower is just to the north. ( 鼓楼 ; Gu-

Local Life
Dance in the Shadow of the Drum Tower
The small square between the Drum and Bell Towers is great for people-watching. Come nightfall, the towers are
lit up beautifully and the locals from the nearby hutong come out to play. Especially fun is the formation dancing.
It's very informal and strangers are welcomed. When you're done with twirling around, grab a drink at the Drum
and Bell ( 鼓钟咖啡馆 ; 41 Zhonglouwan Hutong; 钟楼湾胡同 41 ; beers from ¥15, cocktails from ¥35;
1pm-2am) , which sits between the two towers and has a fine roof terrace in the summer.

The tower was first constructed in 1272, but felled numerous times by fire; its present
structure dates from 1745, although it looks noticeably more ancient that the neighbouring
Drum Tower, which is just to the south. Climb up the steep steps (carefully) to gawk at the
63-tonne bell and for a sweeping panorama over the surrounding hutong . ( 钟楼 ; 9 Zhon-
