What's in a Name?
You can't miss the start of Ghost St. Officially a strip of Dongzhimennei Dajie ( 东直
门内大街 ), it's lined with hundreds of swaying red lanterns. The street gets its un-
usual moniker from the large statue of an ancient bronze food vessel that stands at
the far eastern end of Dongzhimennei Dajie, the name of which is pronounced the
same as the Mandarin word for a ghost.

Beijingers don't stand on ceremony when it comes to their favourite pastime of eat-
ing with as noisy and loud a group of people as possible. The fun starts outside the
restaurants, where boisterous crowds wait for a table, while restaurant workers line
