Tiananmen Square
The world's largest public square and now the very centre
of the Chinese universe, Tiananmen Square ( 天安门广场 ;
Tiananmen Guangchang ) in its current incarnation was
conceived by Mao Zedong as a monument to the omnipo-
tence of the Communist Party. The huge expanse of con-
crete - all 440,000 sq metres of it - is certainly awe-inspir-
ing, even if stringent security means it is not the most re-
laxing place. But there's more than enough room to shake a leg and the views can be
breathtaking, especially at night when the square is illuminated.

Flag-raising/Lowering Ceremonies
Hugely popular with domestic tourists and an undeniably eye-catching spectacle are the
daily flag-raising and lowering ceremonies. At sunrise and sunset, a crack squad of
People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers march through the Gate of Heavenly Peace and
onto the square at precisely 108 paces per minute, 75cm per pace, before raising or lower-
ing the Chinese flag that flies over the square.
