Forbidden City
Home to 24 emperors and the heart of China for 500 years,
the astonishing Forbidden City (
故宫
; known to the locals
as
Gu Gong
) is an absolute must-see for any visitor to
Beijing. So-called because an unauthorised visit would res-
ult in instant death, it's both the largest palace complex in
the world and the best-preserved collection of ancient ar-
chitecture in China. There are 800 buildings, with 9000
rooms, as well as courtyards, pavilions and gardens, so ex-
pect to spend some time here.
